The hamlet of Udimore stretches across a ridge sitting high beyond Rye overlooking the Tillingham valley leading to the villages of Broad Oak and Brede. The hamlet is (3 miles ) from Rye, (11 miles) from Hastings and (12 miles) from the Wealden town of Tenterden.
The Norman Church of St Mary’s is surrounded by old farm cottages and small scattering of oast houses and orchards. Long ago when folk believed in angels helping on the work of the land and world, they believed that the stones of the which the church was built were carried to safety every night when the tide would have washed them away and while the builders slept the angels took the stones singing Over the mere, Over the mere, so through the many corruptions since those days comes Udimore taken from “The Kings England”.
Next to the church is a new village hall which serves the community well. There is a local gastro pub called the Plough Inn situated on B2089 as you drive through this charming hamlet.
