The town of St Leonards gently meets with Hastings as the towns have grown and expanded over past years. Originally described a “new town” built over 190 years ago on farmland, this town has a rich history in architecture and development. Its founder, James Barton was a builder and developer of the time and he was largely responsible for the development of Regents Park in London. James Barton purchased the land from the Eversfield Estate, West of Hasting, to build a Victorian seaside. Today the town has a mix of Victorian, Regency and Georgian properties within walking distance of the sea with more modern developments on the periphery. The area draws in writers, journalists and designers who expand the artistic community of St Leonards. Architects of the past have designed and built noteworthy developments such as Marine Court built in 1936 -38 styled on the Cunard White Star line “Queen Mary” and awarded Grade 11 status in 1999. https:// www.1066online.co.uk/hastings-history/west-st-leonards/ Travelling from St Leonards to London ( Charing Cross) take 1 hr 29mins, Brighton can be reached in under the hour and more local areas such as Rye is (14 miles) Battle (7 miles) Ashford (33 miles)
