The village of Camber is situated (5 miles) from Rye and is well known for its fine sandy beach and soft sandy dunes known as Camber Sands. This five mile beach runs from the mouth of the River Rother up towards the military ranges past Jury’s Gap. The beach has become a popular destination with holidaymakers, kite surfers, dog walkers, equestrian riders and filmmakers alike, with its south facing vistas looking out into the English Channel. The village has grown significantly over the past 60 years with many original houses now being demolished and rebuilt or renovated to meet modern standards. This is particularly true for many of the original small beach fronting buildings in ‘The Suttons’ which have either been rebuilt or renovated into smart, architecturally innovative buildings, making many into millionaire properties with direct access onto the beach.
Situated behind the dunes is a number of unmade sand roads with an eclectic mix of wooden bungalows and infill properties such as the development of ‘Royal William Square’ that combines quality, contemporary design with environmental sustainability. To the western end of the village is “Whitesands’ a new timber clad housing development attracting a mix of locals and second home buyers with easy walking access of the dunes and beach. A central road runs through Camber, called New Lydd Road with a mix of post war housing, as well as providing access to various amenities including village stores, post office, St. Thomas the Apostle Church https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/4832 as well as access to Pontins Holiday resort and Park Resorts Holiday Park.
The village also benefits from a number of cafes, two pubs, a couple of beach side stores as well as benefiting from a refurbished coastal hotel called ‘The Gallivant’. https://www.thegallivant.co.uk which has an award-winning restaurant which has become popular with the London set and has also become a desirable wedding venue, offering photo-shoots on the beach.
On the edge of Camber is Rye Golf Club a famous private members links golf course that enjoys challenging holes set within the Sand dunes. Rye train station offers links to Hastings and Ashford and connections to London St Pancras. https://www.trainline.com .
